About the role
As our Tax Manager - Advisory & Risk, you will be integral to the strategic direction and success of our Taxation Function. Reporting to the Head of Group Tax, you'll directly support the leadership team, including Heads of Tax, Senior Tax Manager - Advisory & Risk, and the broader tax team, contributing significantly to tax-related initiatives and M&A projects.
The Tax team at Transurban plays a key role in the business’ success, offering technical advice and driving commercial outcomes for our growing ASX-listed organisation. They navigate the complexities of various ownership structures and evolving taxation laws to provide practical guidance on tax administration / risk management, compliance and business projects.
Day-to-day, you will:
Oversee tax structuring for project work in collaboration with legal, treasury, and finance teams
Liaise with external advisers and the ATO as needed
Lead transaction implementation by coordinating with legal, finance, treasury and other internal stakeholders
Act as the primary point of contact between the Tax and Finance teams to keep up to date on accounting transactions or changes impacting tax positions
Assess the tax impacts of projects on internal asset/corporate models
Understand and communicate the tax treatment for toll road assets through the construction to operational phases
Conduct research and prepare supporting documentation, including Reasonably Arguable Position Papers, King’s Counsel Opinions, and technical papers to manage tax risks
Collaborate with external advisers on technical papers and tax positions to appropriately manage tax risks
Review and update tax assumptions in financial models for relevant Australian operations to ensure accuracy of modelled tax outcomes
Present on tax matters to the tax team and the broader Transurban business as
Provide leadership, mentoring, and coaching to team members
This role will suit someone with a curious mind and transferrable skills and experiences, including:
Tertiary qualification with CA/TIA/CPA or a legal/tax-related postgraduate degree
5+ years of experience in chartered accounting, legal firms or corporate settings
Strong technical knowledge and experience in relation to Australian income tax laws
Proven leadership in managing, developing, and motivating teams
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, fostering relationship-building
Self-starter, excellent problem-solving skills and and a high attention to detail
Innovative thinker to, bring new ideas and processes to the group
Ability to meet tight deadlines, handle multiple tasks, and contribute to a collaborative working culture
Independence in progressing complex transactions
Excellent understanding of various legal structures and capital intensive businesses
Comfortable with working in complex business environments and managing multiple stakeholders and priorities
Familiarity with debt and financing concepts
Proficiency with Excel
