Job Description

This role is ideally suited for that candidate who is looking to take the next step in their career and has Head of Tax in their sights. Senior Tax Manager roles in TAL are required to be able to work across all portfolios and tax subject areas and should expect to work across various of these from time to time. However, each role will have a key point of focus and provide back up to other areas.

The Senior Tax Manager - Indirect Tax, in TAL acts as a trusted partner to leaders across the TAL business, accountable for providing accurate, complete and timely advice that deliver commercially sound, and compliant, solutions which focus on Indirect tax matters. This role is key in driving compliant outcomes with our key stakeholders and influencing commercial initiatives. The role requires the individual to take accountability for setting compliant requirements that other areas maybe required to meets these requirements. The role then requires the individual to take accountability for auditing compliance against the requirements and influencing areas outside of the tax function to take accountability for the execution of the requirements.

Incumbents in this role use their professional knowledge to deliver high impact advice across Finance, and TAL more broadly, and are expected to provide advice on the achievement of key commercial objectives, providing advice that influences commercial decisions that TAL needs to address which focus on Indirect tax matters.

The Senior Tax Manager -Indirect Tax role ensures:

  • All Indirect tax matters relating to the TDA Tax group are dealt with in accordance with the law and are accurately recorded and reported,
  • Indirect tax impacts upon customers and policyholders are accurate and correct,
  • Implications of new tax laws and other compliance requirements are understood, planned for and implemented and business leaders are aware of their obligations in relation to these
  • TAL is well represented in relevant external bodies and with associated regulatory and other compliance bodies.

The Senior Tax Manager - Indirect tax, is also accountable for ensuring the implementation of policies, processes, calculations, models, procedures, and compliance obligations, especially in respect of governance, risk management and documentation relevant to all TAL Business Units. The role ensures the provision of accurate and timely advice to the business and developing and enhancing relationships with stakeholders throughout TAL and with external parties, such as the ATO and State Revenue Authorities. The Senior Tax Manager - Indirect tax is accountable for enhancing existing processes and continually improving the level of support provided to the TAL business with a particular focus on various strategic programs focusing on Indirect tax matters. This role is expected to oversee the work of the Tax Analysts, and other junior staff who may support Tax from time to time, who support the deliverables of the Tax Team, providing coaching and training as required to ensure the capability development of all team members.

Key Accountabilities:

Business (revenue) related tax accountabilities:

  • Manage tax risk end to end throughout the Business in accordance with the TAL Risk Governance Framework as it relates to Indirect tax.
  • Be responsible for and accountable for setting requirements for the business to execute that are designed to ensure compliance against tax law. This means not providing interpretations of the law but rather gain an understanding commercial and operational process and based on these facts provide the business with purpose-built requirements that when executed will ensure compliance with the law. The role is then required to update these requirements as regulations change
  • Ensure the TAL Group has robust systems, processes and controls in place to meet all regulatory and customer tax compliance obligations
  • Advise and partner with TAL Business Unit leaders on matters such as:
    • Goods & Services Tax
    • Stamp Duty
    • Fringe Benefits Tax
    • Advisory support in relation to various Payroll initiatives including but not limited to State Tax changes and global mobility proposals.
    • New product set up and ensuring efficient and compliance tax outcomes are considered.
  • Drive indirect tax outcomes, particularly in relation to duty, when it comes to new products strategic developments. You will be seen as a key stakeholder that is capable of having discussions and leading implementation efforts in this regard. You will be able to work autonomously and escalate where required.
  • Active engagement with key Regulators to ensure TAL is compliant and is operating within its Tax Risk Governance Framework. You will be able to drive audit engagements and feel confident to have hold such discussions independently.
  • Explain the tax position to internal and external stakeholders, at all levels, and show a clear means of substantiating the position. Your advice will be able to be easily understood and implemented.
  • Manage internal and external audit reviews where applicable.
  • Provide accurate, complete and timely tax advice and services on a range of topics in support of commercial decisions with a focus on Indirect taxes
  • Implement news systems and processes and manage the integration of a new tax function for newly acquired businesses as required

Corporate related tax accountabilities:

  • Manage tax risk end to end throughout the Business in accordance with the TAL Risk Governance Framework
  • Provide expert advice on matters related to Indirect tax (incl., GST, FBT, Stamp Duty)
  • Ensure the accurate provision of a range of compliance deliverables for the TDA group
  • Ensure the TAL Group has robust systems, processes and controls in place to meet all regulatory and customer tax compliance obligations
  • Ensure that current tax models and calculators are fit for purpose
  • Management of relevant returns, compliance and reporting requirements ensuring the engagement of internal and external stakeholders (incl GST, FBT, Payroll Tax support, Stamp Duty, and others where required)
  • Manage the external auditors in relation to their tax reviews

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and practical experience in applying Australia’s Corporate & Indirect Tax laws for a financial services business.
  • Knowledge and experience of life insurance, funds management, custody or superannuation would be ideal.
  • Understanding of ATO requirements and expectations
  • Understanding of various State Revenue Authorities requirements and expectations
  • Demonstrated ability, and a strong desire, to work with management in working through commercial issues.
  • Experience and skill in providing clear, confident, supported tax advice (verbal and written) to all types of stakeholders and in providing clear, practical instructions where required
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly explain the tax position and tax results to management
  • Ability to translate tax law requirements accurately into practical requirements for systems and processes
  • Ability and desire to learn new areas of tax law, commercial arrangement, systems and process development, Mergers and Acquisitions, operating in a conglomerate
  • Confidence in working with accounting information and data
  • A hands-on approach to assignments and getting things done
  • Qualifications in tax / tax law
