The acute physiotherapy service at The Alfred and Sandringham hosptials is organised into five functional streams, namely: Intensive Care, Musculoskeletal, Respiratory, PAN (Progressive Illness, Aged Care and Neurosciences), and Sandringham. The first four streams are located at The Alfred site, with the fifth and latter stream based at the Sandringham site. Some of these streams also provide an outpatient service as well as their dedicated inpatient service provision. This large department has approximately 70EFT from more than 100 staff.

The subacute physiotherapy service is provided from a base at Caulfield Hosptial. The department provides an extensive range of inpatient and ambulatory services in the areas of rehabilitation, aged care and transitional care services. The physiotherapy department has approximately 70 staff with a further 36 physiotherapists working in other ambulatory and community services on site.  The department provides subacute clinical services and expertise in the following areas: acquired brain injury (ABI), neurology, non-traumatic spinal cord injury, orthopaedics, amputees, burns, complex regional pain, cardiac rehabilitation, aged care, transitional care and aged psychiatry. The department staff operate in 4 clinical streams: ABI, Health of Older Person, Neurological and spinal rehabilitation, Musculoskeletal rehabilitation and provide both fast and slow stream inpatient rehab. Rehab provision includes traditional inpatients at caulfield site, as well as patients in a bed substitution model at their own homes, our 'Better at Home' program.
